Safari Chic

Ever dreamed of roughing it on the plains of the Serengeti with basic shelter and repeating outfits? Neither have I. Thankfully we are not alone. Accommodations all over South Africa, Kenya, and Tanzania are taking the "glamping" trend to a whole new level. Offering plush bedding, breezy tents the size of hotel rooms, and gourmet cooking, these resorts have it all. Safari chic hasn't looked this good since Michael Kors Spring 2012 collection.

Figuring out what to pack is daunting no matter where you are headed, but when going to Africa it is particularly stressful. You will be facing bugs, snakes, and wild animals - all in the sweltering heat. But have no fear this fashionista has your baggage already packed.

There are a few important things to keep in mind when packing:

1. Fabric: Stick with natural fibers like cotton and linen for their breathability as well as their absorption. These light fabrics will keep your body temperature low without sacrificing style. Avoid fabrics like chiffon; while they may look sheer and flowy, they will trap in heat. No matter how cute that blouse is you'll be wishing for a plain cotton tee in minutes.

2. Color: Although it may seem obvious, avoid dark colors. Stick to a neutral color palette of white, khaki, olive, and brown. As boring as they may sound, they can be flattering on everyone and will help keep you cool. But if you are longing for some color save it for nighttime. Wearing bright colors during the day will only scare away the wildlife - so blending in is better if you want the true safari experience.

3. Fit: No skin tight clothes here; flowy is your friend. Loose-fitting clothes allow air to circulate and are much easier to move in. Also keep in mind that while it is your vacation, you should be respectful of the surrounding areas. African culture is much more reserved than what we are used to. Avoid short hemlines and low necklines. Exposed shoulders should be covered by a light button-up - which will not only protect you from the sun, but provides endless possibilities of mixing outfits.

Shoes need to be comfortable, so make sure they are broken in before packing. During the day lace-up boots or classic sneakers will not only look cute, but they are ready for any running that may be required (ie. stampedes, crazed lions, etc.). While lounging around the camp cute sandals are a must whether they are heeled or flat.

Easy to carry bags only. When you're following a herd of elephants the last thing that's on your mind is where you left your clutch. Backpacks and cross-body satchels are perfect for storing the necessities (sunscreen, camera, water) without getting in the way.

Belts are the perfect safari accessory. They can quickly add a pop of color or edgy studs to any outfit without looking over the top. Although you won't be paying much attention to the time, watches are a cute and practical replacement for bracelets.

Last but not least, don't forget your sun protection! The African sun can be brutal to those who aren't used to it. Make sure you pack plenty of sunscreen (and actually use it), sunglasses with UV protection, and of course a hat.  Scarves are a fun way to tame your hair and protect your scalp from a sunburn. With so many different methods of tying them the possibilities are endless. Need some inspiration? Try these styles: 1 and 2.
