Fill Up My Cup

Rain come down on us,
end this summer streak of its reign.
Come pounding on our rooftops.
Knock at our windows that
we may open them with vigor.

To hear the splish-splash of wet beads
spilling onto deep puddles;
drops that have fallen ahead,
establishing the groundwork.

The date of this downpour unknown,
so we wait with patience
  for its imminent return,
making its arrival all the more sweet.

Sweet in the sense of
rain licked pavement, aromas rising.
The freshness of dew air abounds,
and overwhelming joy of being washed clean.

Don't let sodden days cloud your mind.
Umbrella's of defense left behind,
forcing you to walk fearlessly
through the mist with nothing but trust.

Trust that the slippery slope of havoc will not wreak
Remember days of singing in the rain,
the ends of your hair embracing
the water fall, drinking it up.

Closing your eyes, head tilted toward the sky
lends the greyness new meaning.
The drought is overcome, the thirst is quenched.
Dreary days are no longer, instead days of
victory over storms.

I wrote this as I am currently living through the warmest winter California has seen in years.  While the warmth is a blessing, I am holding out hope for the next sign of rain.  Literally speaking, I want the rain to come on down so as to feel the change in season.  I actually enjoy cool weather and bundling up to combat the weather.  Metaphorically speaking, do we enjoy these great blessings/sunshine without times of hardship/rain? It is the trials of life that cause us to rely on a greater God, who holds the power of rain in His hand.
Think about the cleverness of creation, the rain clouds were made in such a way so as not to burst under the pressure of water weight, all the while floating through the sky (Job 26:8-9).  Mind blowing! A God who creates such a creation as this is to be trusted to lead us through the storms brought forth in our lives, and see the meaning behind them.  There is a reason for this downpour of trials.  These are the times of testing our faith to see that we trust Him, which is what grows us stronger in Him!  True, I can only stand so much rain, fortunately there's the promise of a rainbow on the other side; beauty always triumphs in the end.

"Let my teaching drop as the rain, my speech distill as the dew,
as raindrops on the tender herb, and as showers on the grass." Deuteronomy 32:2
